During Pandava Vanavasam poor Droupadi had one grain of rice left to share from the akshaya patra, which was the humble offering she presented to Bhagavan Krishna during his visit. She could not say no to anyone even in her hardship of living in the forest. Touched by Droupadi’s gesture of devotion and simplicity, Krishna was overjoyed. In return for this act of love and faith, He blessed Droupadi with immense prosperity of always having anna at her home, and also freeing Pandavas from immediate hardship caused by Kauravas sending Durvasa and his shishyas. This beautiful story reminds us that serving the needy is akin to serving the divine.

It is a way for family members to express gratitude and connect spiritually with their departed atman for their peace and join in offering prayers together. A puja is usually performed on the death anniversary according to the chandramaana, lunar calendar but it can also be done during the annual Pitru-Paksha period.
The key elements of a traditional death ceremony that families can follow to make this occasion meaningful.
- Pitru-paksha puja just before Devi Navaratri on the most auspicious Mahalaya Amavasya
- Many families distributing food to the needy, anna-danam which is considered auspicious for the atman’s journey.

- One month groceries for a Brahmana family.
- Vastram for a Brahmana (అన్నదానాన్ని మించిన దానం లేదంటారు. వస్త్రదానం కూడా పవిత్రమైందే. అన్నవస్త్రాలనే మాట జంటగా వాడుతుంటాం.)
It is not only a tribute but also a means to bring closure, peace and spiritual connection for both the departed atman and their family.
